Introducing Pantone Colour of the Year 2020

Happy New Year!  Its been a while since we last uploaded to the blog, but with a new year comes resolutions and top of the list for me is to write more content to share with you all!  So, without further ado, what better way to kickstart January than by looking ahead to what the colour forecasters at Pantone have declared as Colour of the Year.  Drum roll please…the much-anticipated colour of the year for 2020 is a timeless and enduring blue hue – Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue.

The colour experts describe the shade as being reminiscent of the sky at dusk.  “It’s a colour that anticipates what’s going to happen next” said Laurie Pressman the vice president of the Pantone Colour Institute which selects the colour of the year.  In Pantone’s own words, they feel that the colour highlights dependability, trustworthiness, credibility, and constancy, all traits that are valued in the fast-paced, high-stress situations of the current world.

To us, it certainly has a timeless and elegant feel to it, but also feels quite fresh especially when paired with more neutral shades…perfect for weddings, milestone birthdays or, as the hero colour for a baby boy baby shower.

According to Pantone, the colour instills calm, confidence and connection; highlighting our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build, as we cross the threshold into a new decade of 2020.

We thought we would take a closer look at the colour of the moment and offer some insight into how you can incorporate it into your celebrations.

Touches of classic blue offer a simple, yet elegant colour palette for your wedding day or party and can be incorporated with subtle hints of the colour or bold impact statements.

So how can you incorporate it into your event?  We have suggested a few ideas:

  1. Stationery

Invitations set the tone for your event and give your guests a glimpse of what they can expect.  You could use classic blue as your background colour, which works fantastically with gold accents or blue text with a classic blue envelope liner or hand tied ribbons

  1. Shoes

We all know shoes are the finishing touch to the perfect outfit.  Stunning velvet blue shoes with a cocktail dress for your birthday celebrations or a pop of colour underneath your wedding dress for something blue!

  1. Attire

A blue suit for the groomsman, classic blue for the bridesmaids, an elegant evening dress or a cute cocktail dress.  This year’s Pantone Colour of the Year works for both genders and a multitude of occasions.

  1. Decor

You could incorporate soft blue hues into your floral arrangements– Hydrangeas, Delphinium, thistle sprays – or a balloon installation for your cake display at a baby shower or birthday celebration combining shades of blue with gold or silver for a party feel.

5. Candles

Tapered candles are a great way to subtly add colour to your table.  Arranged at varying heights creates an aesthetically pleasing sea of romantic candlelight.

  1. Linens

Add a pop of colour to your tables with dark table linens, contrasting napkins or a classic blue ribbon tie.  Combined with hints of gold and candlelight can create a table of simple elegance.

  1. Furniture

If you have a more casual celebration, an engagement party or birthday celebration  and are looking to transform your venue for your evening reception, bringing in a few staple furniture items  – blue velvet sofas, chairs or stools – can create bold and dramatic impact.

  1. Coloured Glassware

Add a pop of colour to your table or cocktail bar with beautiful blue glassware – a lovely hint of colour which adds sophistication to any set-up.

  1. Napkins and coasters

Add a touch of personalisation to your event with monogrammed napkins and coasters.  These could be created in a blue hue with gold foiling and used throughout your party or during your post ceremony drinks reception and evening celebrations.

So if you are looking to create a stylish and elegant occasion, classic blue will not disappoint.  Subtle hints throughout or a bold dark statement, it is sure to wow your guests and create a timeless and refined aesthetic whatever the occasion.
