How to entertain children at a wedding

Our clients say it every time, they want their guests to have an amazing experience at their wedding. They want them to feel looked after. They don’t want them to be bored. They want them to enjoy every second and walk away saying it was the best wedding they’ve ever been to.

Looking after your guests is paramount for a great atmosphere and wonderful memories and this relates to guests big and small. If you choose to have children at your wedding then it is important to look after them as this will not only mean they have a great day, but their parents will also!

Here are a few ideas to keep children entertained throughout your celebrations.

1 // Lawn Games
If your wedding is during the summer months and your venue offers outside space, it’s a great idea to set up some lawn games in a designated area for the children to enjoy.
• Giant Jenga
• Giant Connect Four
• Lawn bowling
• Hula hoops

You could even erect some stylish tipis to provide shade and to act as quiet zones or craft zones which could look really cool and be practical at the same time.

2 // Personalised Party Box
Create age appropriate party boxes for the children. These could be placed at their place setting instead of a favour to keep them busy during the wedding breakfast.

A few items you could include are:
• Colouring/activity books and crayons
• Mini toy e.g. yo-yo, bubbles, glow sticks
• Disposable camera – I-Spy but with a disposable camera. Your stationer could create an I spy list in keeping with your day stationary which should keep them entertained throughout the day taking their own snaps.

3 // Kids Table
If there are a number of children of a similar age attending, you could create a kids table and hire a baby sitter to supervise. Children will find it more enjoyable sitting together as well as giving their parents a little break during the wedding breakfast to enjoy their meal.

4 // Professional Entertainment
If the budget allows you could consider hiring a professional children’s entertainer to keep the children occupied for example:
• Magicians
• Balloon modellers

You may find that if you’ve hired an entertainer for the main wedding party, they can also provide an age appropriate version for the little ones in attendance also.

5 // Movie Room
As the evening continues, children can become very tired and so it is important to keep this in mind and be prepared as it is a very long day for them. If your venue has the space available, you could set up a quiet movie room and chill space for them. Fill the room with large cushions, beanbags and a few blankets and they can snuggle down and watch a film and wind down following a busy day.

6 // Professional Minders
There are a number of wedding and event crèche companies that offer different packages from ceremony and wedding breakfast only, to all day crèche services and even a bedtime minding service for children staying at the wedding venue. They bring everything with them to entertain and supervise the children; all you need to do is allocate an area at your venue which is a separate space away from your wedding guests. Your guests can then relax knowing that if their child becomes restless and needs to let off steam and play some games there are professionals on hand to help.
